Get a Free Porcelain QuotePorcelain has revolutionised the modern patio over the last decade. It looks like premium natural stone, performs better than any natural material in every measurable way, requires almost no maintenance, and is rapidly becoming the patio of choice for new-build and renovation projects across Hampshire.
Porcelain is manufactured: clay, feldspar, silica and mineral pigments fired at over 1200°C into a vitrified (fully-fused) tile. The firing process is what gives porcelain its unique properties — effectively zero porosity, exceptional strength, complete colour stability, and the ability to be manufactured in any colour, texture or effect you can imagine.
Our family team installs the full range of outdoor-grade porcelain. Below are the most popular effects and finishes for Hampshire patios. All quality outdoor porcelain we install is 20mm thick — not the 8-10mm tiles meant for interior floors, which simply don’t survive British winters.

Why porcelain is taking over
Five reasons porcelain has become the dominant new patio material across Hampshire:
- Virtually maintenance-free. Brush, wash, done. No sealing, no re-jointing every few years, no colour fade.
- Slip-rated. Quality outdoor porcelain is rated R11 minimum (R12-R13 for poolside or sloped use). The textured surface gives proper grip even when soaking wet.
- Frost-proof. Zero water absorption means zero freeze-thaw damage. Quality porcelain carries a 20-year freeze-thaw warranty.
- Stain-resistant. Red wine, oil, BBQ grease, bird droppings — all wash off porcelain. The vitrified surface doesn’t absorb anything.
- Colour stability. Pigments are fired into the tile, not painted on. Porcelain looks identical in 20 years to how it looks on day one.
Sizes and formats
Standard outdoor porcelain comes in formats designed for visual rhythm and practical installation:
| Format | Best for | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 600 x 600mm | Standard residential patios | Most popular format, widest stock |
| 900 x 600mm | Larger areas | Slightly more contemporary |
| 900 x 900mm | Premium installations | Premium pricing, dramatic feel |
| 1200 x 600mm | Modern linear lay | Striking on long terraces |
| 1200 x 200/300mm | Plank-effect (wood/stone) | Contemporary plank look |
| Bullnose & step nosings | Step risers and pool edges | Matched to main slabs |
Our family team will recommend the best format based on the size and proportions of your patio. As a general rule: smaller patios suit 600×600 (avoids overwhelming the space), medium patios suit 900×600, and large patios benefit from 900×900 or 1200×600 to keep visual rhythm.
How we install porcelain patios
Porcelain installation requires more precision than natural stone because of the material’s zero porosity — conventional mortar won’t bond to it. Our family team uses the proven slurry-prime method:
- Excavation to 150-200mm below finished level
- Type 1 MOT sub-base laid in 50mm compacted layers
- Slurry-prime applied to the back of every porcelain slab before bedding
- Full mortar bed using a specifically-graded porcelain bedding mix
- 5-6mm joints with porcelain-specific epoxy or polymeric jointing
- Concrete-haunched edge restraints
- Diamond wet-cutting for clean edges (porcelain shatters under percussion cutting)
Skipping any of these steps — particularly the slurry-prime — is why some porcelain patios fail within 12 months. We’ve fixed enough botched installs over the years to know exactly what the shortcuts cost.
Outdoor-rated 20mm porcelain vs interior 10mm
A critical specification point that some cowboys exploit: outdoor porcelain is 20mm thick (or 30mm for very heavy traffic). Interior porcelain is typically 8-10mm. Some installers buy interior porcelain (because it’s half the price) and lay it outdoors. The result is freeze-thaw cracking within 2-3 winters, slabs lifting from inadequate bedding, and shattered tiles where furniture or planters sit.
Every porcelain patio our family team installs is 20mm outdoor-grade rated for British weather. The price difference is real but the alternative is having to replace the whole patio in 5 years. Insist on 20mm in any quote you receive.
Maintenance schedule
Porcelain is genuinely the lowest-maintenance patio surface available:
- Weekly: Brush off leaves and debris.
- Monthly: Hose down or rinse with water in summer.
- Twice yearly: Wash with mild detergent (no acidic cleaners).
- As needed: Treat any oil, paint or rust spills promptly — they should still wash off easily but quicker is easier.
- Never: No sealing required. No re-jointing (with quality polymeric or epoxy joints). No re-staining or re-painting.
That’s the entire schedule. Properly installed porcelain looks identical in 20 years to how it looks on day one.
Porcelain patio FAQs
How much does a porcelain patio cost in Hampshire?
Budget £130-190 per square metre supplied and installed by our family team for standard 20mm outdoor porcelain. Premium effects (marble-look, large-format 900×900, designer ranges) sit at £160-230 per m². The price reflects both the material and the more technically demanding installation.
Is porcelain really as low-maintenance as people say?
Yes — genuinely. We have customer patios from 8-10 years ago that have had nothing more than occasional brushing and twice-yearly washing, and they still look essentially new. The vitrified surface simply doesn’t absorb stains, fade, or develop the patina that natural stone does.
Can I lay porcelain over an existing concrete or paved area?
Sometimes — depends on the condition of the existing base. If it’s flat, properly drained and structurally sound, we can lay porcelain directly with the slurry-prime method. If the existing base has movement, cracks or drainage problems, we’d normally recommend lifting and starting fresh to avoid those problems telegraphing through to the new surface.
Will porcelain look fake or manufactured?
Cheaper porcelain can look manufactured — particularly stone-effect tiles with obvious repeating patterns. Premium ranges use 8-10 different pattern variations within a pack, so no two slabs look identical, mimicking natural stone variation convincingly. We bring samples to your site visit so you can judge for yourself before committing.
What about porcelain in cold winters and frost?
Quality 20mm outdoor porcelain is rated for freeze-thaw cycles down to -25°C. British winters are nowhere near that severe. Frost damage on properly-installed quality porcelain is essentially impossible — we’ve never seen it.
Does porcelain work for swimming pool surrounds?
Yes — in fact it’s the preferred material for new pool surrounds. R12-R13 slip rated grades give excellent wet-foot traction, the material doesn’t stain from pool chemicals, and the colour stability means the pool surround looks identical to day one even after years of chlorine exposure.
